Not everyone wants to share the spotlight with their horse or dog and that's OK! With some creativity, tricks of composition and specific camera settings you can be in the photos with your pet, but not be front and center.
Keep reading to learn about five of my strategies and see example images.
SILHOUETTES
SILHOUETTES
These beautiful and dynamic photos are wonderful to get as you're interacting with your horse or dog. Both you and your pet are shapes against a dramatic sky, with only stark outlines to tell your story. There are a lot of tricks to getting great silhouette photos and I will talk you through all of it at your session.
WE'LL GIVE YOU A LEG UP
LEGS
There are lots of possibilities here! Your legs draped over your horse, your dog sitting next to you or walking by your side. There are so many opportunities during a photo session to keep you in the frame while your pet is the star of the show.
IN/OUT OF FOCUS
IN/OUT OF FOCUS
Your horse or dog is front and center and in laser-focus while you're in the background. I implement this technique a lot as I think it's a beautiful look.
I will also put the focus on something interesting in the foreground (a flower, tree, etc.) and all the people/pet subjects are out of focus. These are great images to add variety to a custom album.
THESE PHOTOS WIN, HANDS DOWN
HANDS
Stroking your horse's neck, holding your dog's paw or petting her head. You're present in the photo and we're seeing your love for your horse or dog, but your pet is the main focus of the image.
GO AWAY!
JUST WALK AWAY
I'm putting on my long lens, asking you to walk away from me and shooting you from a distance. Maybe you're walking with your dog in a scenic landscape, or taking your horse through a field - in these types of images there's more to look at than just you and your pet. And as you can see, you don't need to be walking toward the camera for it to be a beautiful photo.
So there, 5 reasons for you to not delay your pet photography session any longer!
