The 2022 Pet Calendar Project - Fourth Session
Beth, Brie & Bambi
I opened up the contest to allow two dogs from the same family to enter and I'm glad I did! Brie and Bambi are one of three pairs of dogs who will be sharing a calendar month.
Photographing multiple dogs is often twice the laughs but it's often more than twice the challenge. Because not only does each dog have to be facing the right way, looking where I want, showing their personality etc. but they have to look good doing all those things together. One dog might be shy while the other is bouncing off the walls so managing different personality types is part of the fun. And you end up taking way more photos of multiple subjects because if someone blinks you can't use that image.
You can explain what you want to people, things like, "Put your left arm around the other's shoulder" and create an image where everyone looks in harmony. For dogs and horses you really have to know them, love working with them and have some tricks up your sleeve. (One reason you want to choose a pet photographer!)
Two things are absolutely required - patience and a sense of humor! C'mon, how can you not laugh when you're working with these adorable faces!?
Our location was the fantastic Tomato Barn in Washington Boro, PA. A huge thanks to the owner, Ryan, who didn't hesitate to say, "Of course!" when I scouted the location last month and asked if I could use the barn as a backdrop.
Brie and Bambi were fabulous, and the fact that they ignored the loose ducks and chickens nearby was a huge plus. We tried a lot of things to see what worked, including putting Bambi in a basket. I couldn't resist! She was a sport about it all and got fed lots of treats by her mom, Beth who was standing right next to her the whole time. Bambi was a hoot and gave me lots of expressive looks and behaviors - what a little character! Brie's beautiful brindle coat looked amazing and we got some great images. They both tried really hard to understand what we were asking and they both were wonderful.
