The 2022 Pet Calendar Project - Sixth Session
Rio, Paul & Steli
Paul, Steli and their dog Rio get the long distance award, coming all the way from Pittsburgh for their calendar photo session! Our first attempt was rained out, like so many sessions this summer - ugh! - but it was worth the wait. We met at Columbia River Park on a steamy summer evening and though it was hot the skies were a beautiful blue with the sun slipping in and out of hazy clouds.
Rio is a strapping boy with beautiful markings and a big personality - I knew the camera would love him. We had a challenge ahead though because people were out enjoying the park with their families, dogs and bikes. That meant LOTS of distractions for Rio.
An Old Mustard Packet
Everything was going great and Rio was trying so hard to do what the humans wanted but at some point my ears-up noises started losing their effectiveness - in this location there were plenty of thing for him to look at instead of my camera. We were searching for something to throw in the air - a stick was at the top of our list but a little stone or plastic bottle would have worked in a pinch. While Steli held Rio, Paul searched and searched for something. It turns out Columbia River Park is a very clean place! But finally Paul found an old mustard packet and having nothing else, we gave it a go.
You can see what we did in the photo on the right. Paul was out of the frame holding the (pretty icky) mustard packet. On my count he dropped it right in front of Rio - you can even see it falling through the air. It worked! Rio gave us a perky and cute expression long enough for a frame or two.
Roll with it
I love owners who will go the extra mile with me! Paul and Steli were absolutely super and in a location like that, a busy public park, you really have to think on your feet and be able to just roll with whatever comes your way. When other dogs came along they just removed Rio from the situation and brought him back when the location was quieter. Perfect.
Rio stayed happy and we were happy because he was. :) And that meant we got beautiful images of a happy, sweet dog. WIN WIN WIN
Cliffhangers - I've not included the photo that is likely to be featured in the calendar so you'll have to wait until the calendar comes out in the fall to see it! Such is the case with the other calendar participants I've blogged about. Anticipation is fun, isn't it? :)
Mini Announcement - I have some available days here and there in September if you are interested in a session with your horse, dog or both. Our equine friends start to get fuzzy in September so think about scheduling a session now or you might have to wait until next year. I am booked through fall but have some dates in late October and early November. Email me at valerie@roughcoatphoto.com ASAP if you'd like to get on the schedule or fill in one of the forms below.
